How To Build A Real Business On YouTube

The Studio at TFD Presents: How To Build A Real Business On YouTube, an e-course to help you grow your channel.
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!
When we talk about succeeding on YouTube, we often talk about going viral, getting a ton of subscribers, or collabing with big channels. And these things are important, but they are not what makes a sustainable business on YouTube. In fact, sometimes, they can even work against you if what you want is to be a true entrepreneur who makes a real living with their YouTube channel. And even some of the biggest channels you know have no clue how the business side of things actually works, or how to properly advocate for themselves.
But The Financial Diet co-founder and CEO Chelsea Fagan has been working on YouTube for over six years, and in that time has grown to nearly one million subscribers, with 100,000,000 views, and has most importantly built that channel into a business that supports a dozen employees and remains sustainable year over year. Her channel isn’t the biggest, nor has it followed some of the more standard “succeed on YouTube” formulas, but it has thrived financially and editorially where many other channels have disappeared, fizzled out, or undersold themselves over the years.
So for the first time, Chelsea is hosting her own four-week masterclass explaining the holistic approach to building a business on YouTube that is financially sustainable, ethical, and able to avoid being just another trend that disappears when the conversation changes. If you have your own channel or run one, and are looking to build it into something that lasts and can support your (and others’) salaries, this is the perfect class for you.
This Is For You If:
- You own or run a YouTube channel which you're looking to build into a real, sustainable source of revenue
- You want to understand more about the diverse ways to monetize a YouTube channel -- both inside and beyond the platform
- You are looking to refine your branding, value proposition, and business development on YouTube
- You want to learn how to overcome the obstacles of the algorithm to build a long-term video brand
- You're looking for a community of like-minded YouTubers interested in the long-term game
- You want to laugh while learning something valuable!
Top-level Takeaways

- Master the process of targeting brand partnerships, interacting with clients, and advocating for yourself in the creator marketplace.
- Optimize your content calendar for consistent performance across algorithmic fluctuations.
- Create a sustainable business plan that leverages your content and monetization strategies while minimizing expenses.

Class 1:
Understanding The Business Behind Your Channel
Students will do a 360 assessment of their current channel(s) to understand what their underlying business, value proposition, and market differentiators are. Using this assessment, they will start to form a plan for the model of revenue that makes the most sense for them, their ideal content production model, as well as the expenses they should likely outsource versus absorb. This class will feature interactive reviews of actual volunteer student channels to use as examples.
Homework: Completing an honest assessment of their channel using our template.
Class 2:
Brand Partnerships: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
From navigating (sometimes predatory) agencies and creator reps, to sussing out what is a good versus bad brand deal, to the nitty gritty of what sustainable brand partnerships and sponsored placements look like in practice, this class is a crash course in everything creators need to know about how to leverage brand partnerships to build a solid foundation of their revenue model without compromising their channel’s integrity or creativity.
Homework: Creating a list of potential partners that would work for your channel, as well as a template for brand outreach.
Class 3:
Going Beyond The Algorithm & The Trending Topics
In this class, students will learn about the content models that allow their channel to build sustainability and a loyal audience beyond what the algorithm happens to be favoring, or the trending topics that allow them to be featured more prominently. From understanding audience analytics, to creating a balanced content calendar, to packaging your content optimally, this week will be all about how solid content strategy informs a healthy business on YouTube.
Homework: Creating a well-diversified three-month content calendar.
Class 4:
Building A Holistic Business Model
Maximizing revenue, managing expenses, optimizing workflow and production: all of these must come together harmoniously to create a YouTube channel that can support a real, sustainable business. This class will outline how to diversify your revenue beyond brand partnerships, understand the expenses that should be absorbed versus outsourced, and streamline your production to support a lean, efficient business. In short: this class takes you from having the pieces of a business, to putting the puzzle together.
Homework: Creating a one-year business plan for your channel.
